Update on the 30 day eat at home challenge!
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Apologies that I never got around to posting my grocery list. I sat down and gave it a try, but that information felt oddly personal, so I’m opting out. However, I wanted to update you all on how the 30 day eat at home challenge is progressing, and I have to say, it’s going better than expected. It really helps that it’s “BBQ season” around here, and my boyfriend is making a lot of our dinners outside on the grill - veggies and everything.
I bought what feels like a boatload of fruit and vegetables, and whenever I crave a snack, they’re what I go for. No more running down to the convenience store, (where I’m sure they are longing for me). I eat what’s in the house, and it’s getting easier everyday.
Breakfast is easy, because that’s something I always ate that at home anyway, and my boyfriend and I both are becoming very diligent about bringing our lunches to work. In fact, I have a great little thermos for hot lunches, which is working out great for leftover pasta and such.
Oh! I found this great website called freezehappy. One thing I’d like to start doing is making meals in advance and freezing them. This way, there will be a wholesome meal ready and available to pop in the oven on those lazy days where I might have thought pizza before.
Thanks for all the support, and I offer mine to any who choose to do this with me!

Hi Fergie!
I agree with you, that one of the best ways to convince yourself to eat at home, is to buy a bunch of fruits and veggies. It encourages you to eat them so they won’t go bad!
Something that convinces me to eat at home is a clean kitchen. If I have to clean BEFORE I can eat, I’m way more likely to go out. If I have a fresh slate for an experiment (and yes, for me, cooking is ALWAYS an experiment hahaha) then I will stay home and take advantage of that.
It sounds like you are doing awesome with your 30 day challenge! At the end of the month, i wonder how much you will save from eating out?
Best wishes for the 30-day challenge.
High grade mince in the chilli and the pasta sauce.
I bought and upside down fridge (freezer at bottom), with more room, just for that purpose.
I’m a good cook, however don’t enjoy it. So I do large ‘cook-ups’ and freeze the meals. Usually lentil soup, chilli con carne, nasi goreng and a pasta sauce. I cook enough to last Greg and I a good 2 months, with other meals that Greg cooks, in between.
Thousands of veggies and tons of garlic in each meal!
Always throw into each, 4 eggs and a bag of baby spinach leaves too, plus onions/mushrooms/peas etc.
Cheers, Thea
@Teresa - There’s few things that bother me more than throwing out food, so it’s good that we have to stay home to eat all the fruit and veggies I’ve been buying.
I can relate to the clean kitchen issue. I have a very tidy SO which helps a lot.
@Thea Westra - That’s exactly what I want to do. Keep it up and thanks for the inspiration!
You have some wonderful tips on here–so glad I found your site today!
i wish i had a bigger freezer so that i could freeze meals and stock up on meat when it’s on sale. would come in handy. also? your photo of the pineapple is making me crave some fresh dole chunks.
@Irene - Thanks and welcome!
@tiffanie - I wish I had a bigger freezer, too… oh the stockpiling I could do.
