If you’re like most people, the cost of your utility bill has gone through the roof like everything else these days. While to a certain extent we have no control over this, there are some things that can be done! Try these suggestions and you’ll notice a reduction on your next bill.

  1. Hang-dry clothing: Clothes dryers are high-energy consuming appliances. Using an outdoor clothesline, or hanging clothes to dry indoors, can create a significant savings for you.
  2. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs: These bulbs can use up to 75 percent less energy than conventional light bulbs. Also they last up to ten times longer than regular bulbs.
  3. Unplug items not in use:Some items still consume electricity, even when not being used. Unplugging the appliances you’re not using, or using power strips that can easily be switched on and off, can make a difference in your energy consumption.
  4. Use fans instead of A/C:Whenever possible, try to use fans as opposed to the air conditioner. They use much less power and can be used to cool small areas effectively.
  5. Keep your freezer full:An empty freezer costs more to cool than a stocked freezer. Keeping your freezer full, even if it’s with jugs of water, will help to cut your costs.
  6. Wash in cold water:Many laundry detergents are now designed to effectively clean laundry in cold water, so there is no need to waste energy heating the wash water.
