Saw The Dark Knight for free - review!

Welcome back!

movie clapper

I am not normally a huge fan of the Batman movies, but I fell in love with Heath Ledger when I saw Brokeback Mountain (I also fell in love with Jake Gyllenhaal, but that’s another post). So when my dear mother threw some movie giftcards my way (thanks mum if you’re reading this!!), I knew right away what we were going to see.

I was pleased to make this a frugal outing, refraining from buying any of the fatty snacks offered. I’m not a huge popcorn fan, so this was pretty easy for me. Total cost of evening: zero dollars, zero cents.

Now, usually when a film has received as much hype as The Dark Night, for me personally, it tends to disappoint. Although I was curious to see whether it was a stud or a dud, part of me completely expected this to be only a so-so flick, gathering rave reviews mostly due to Ledger’s lateness.

I am glad to say I was wrong, and that The Dark Knight is truly superb.

It’s pretty obvious what the movie is about, so I’m going to skip the plot recap and go straight to the stars.

All the actors put on a great show. The performance of Christian Bale has been understated, and while not as awe-inspiring as our friend the Joker, he made batman all is own. Clap, clap for Bale.

But yes, Heath Ledger is fricken’ amazing as the joker. No joker has ever come close. Actually, some now appear really bad in retrospect. Heath’s Joker is DARK, chaotic, disturbing, and yet somehow still believable. An Oscar nod wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

The only real downfall to The Dark Knight, is the extraordinary length. It’s a wee bit long, and continues on after the movie has for all intents and purposes been concluded. It’s definitely not enough to ruin The Dark Knight, however, so see it anyway.
