6 Practical ways to save on gasoline
Welcome back!
There is no doubt about it, the price of fuel has gone up, and up, and up… and up some more. Here is a list to help ease the burden on your budget.
- Trade in the SUV for that cute compact - Get rid of that gas guzzling SUV while you still can, and opt for a gas friendly compact car that is more friendly to the environment, and your wallet.
- Stay out of the sun - Heat will cause your vehicle’s gasoline to evaporate, so choose a cool shady spot when parking for extended periods of time.
- Watch your lead foot - Our roads and highways are not Nascar. Accelerate slowly and keep a consistent speed as you drive. The slower you can get away with driving, the better for your fuel economy. When you find yourself speeding, repeat out loud “the faster I go, the faster my fuel goes”.
- Lower the overall mass of your vehicle - Clean out your car and remove any non essential heavy objects, as the more extra weight your vehicle carries, the more gas it uses to transport them.
- Close your windows - Open windows create a drag on your car and lower fuel economy. Don’t bake to death, but when you can, keep those windows closed.
- Properly inflated tires are a must - Tires under the recommended level affect fuel economy in a negative way. To avoid this, remember to check the pressure regularly. I’d go as far as to mark it on the calendar.
The absolute best way to reduce your fuel costs is not to drive, or to drive significantly less. Combine trips, go to the store less often, walk, carpool, use public transit, rollerblade, skateboard, bike, piggyback - whatever it takes, we can save money and help the environment.

These are all great tips. Here are some more:
- Not leaving the engine running those five minutes while you run into the store, post office, etc.
- Turning off your engine while waiting at a railroad crossing, raised drawbridge etc.
- When nearing the crest of a hill, ease off the accelerator and then let gravity bring the speed back up on the downhill side.
- Plan errands so that multiple things can be grouped into a single trip.
@Vimita - Thanks! I’ll check out your blog, too.
@John R - Planning errands so that you’re not making unnecessary multiple trips is a must. I can’t believe I forgot that. Your other tips are great, too.
