Do You Gain Weight Over The Holidays?

November 29th, 2009 | Posted in Personal thoughts

Welcome back!

scale

Now I don’t like to toot my own horn, however the fact of the matter is that I have lost some rather significant weight this year, and would hate to blow it by pigging out on holiday goodies. While I do engage in a fair bit of baking at home, it doesn’t cause me to over eat as my husband pretty much devours everything straight out of the oven (and he never gains a pound, of course). However, it never fails that I gain approximately five pounds every holiday season! Well this year it’s going to be different!

It will be hard not to fall into old habits as there will surely be an abundance of holiday goodies to try, delicious fattening food items to eat, and off course enough egg nog to ensure that everyone has a very nice time(my downfall). However with a little self restraint and a continued commitment to exercise, my “inevitable” holiday weight gain will be avoided. For those of you who are in the same boat as me, I recommend avoiding over eating by filling up on veggies (before enjoying some of the more calorie laden dishes on the table), staying away from alcohol and allowing yourself a small treat here and there in order to keep your sanity.

Trying To Get Rid Of Mice?

November 23rd, 2009 | Posted in Personal thoughts, Saving Money, reviews

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Victor® Rodent Control. All opinions are 100% mine.

As someone who has spent quite a few years living in a rural setting, I have dealt with my share of mice! A few of the pesky rodents actually caused trouble for us just last year, as they made our attic their home and even found their way into our walls. They did some serious damage, tearing up the insulation and even some of our electrical wiring. Unfortunately, it seemed no matter how many traps we laid we the mice just kept coming back. I didn’t want to try poison, as I hated the idea of it being in the home especially since we own a cat (who was unfortunately no help with the mice)! Eventually we managed to snag them all with traps, but it took a long time and lot of headaches!

I don’t recommend going the trap route, especially if you live in the country where there are many mice. What you might consider is purchasing a ultrasonic rodent repellent, such as the Victor® Sonic PestChaser® PRO which is what my family will probably use should we find another mouse in our house. If you’re wondering how ultrasonic repellents work it’s by emitting sound waves that are irritating to mice and cause them to leave the area. The sound waves can only be heard by rodents, so there won’t be any noise to bother your family or any cats or dogs you own. When I first read about the Victor Sonic PetChaser Pro I thought it would be expensive, and was surprised to learn that it’s quite actually affordable, being currently priced at $34.94 per unit

In conjunction with using a product like the Victor Sonic PetChaser Pro, you should ensure to rodent proof your home by using simple measures like keeping your counter tops clean, storing food items (including dog food) in sealed containers and placing pantry items on shelves rather than the floor. Considering A Trip Down South…

November 20th, 2009 | Posted in Personal thoughts, Saving Money

full shopping cart

A day trip that is! As some of you may know, I live relatively close to the Canada/US border (I am on the Canadian side, less than thirty minutes from the border), which has some advantages when it comes to wanting to do some shopping in the US. There are some nice American clothing brands that we don’t get up here, so it’s nice to head down to Bellis Fair in Washington State every once in awhile and treat myself. Never have I done any Christmas shopping in the US though, but I am considering making a day trip in order to take advantage of the strong Canadian dollar and all of the big Christmas sales that will soon be going on.

Now, I have seen the madness of Black Friday sales on television, and am a bit nervous about the mayhem, however a large part of me really wants to snag some deals! So, what do you guys think, am I crazy or are the potential savings really worth navigating through the huge crowds?
